The FBI has arrested a Saudi Arabian employee of OpenAI for allegedly planting a covert listening device in the company’s executive conference room to spy on its operations. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the arrest of Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, on October 9, following the discovery of the device in a room used by OpenAI executives. According to the DOJ, Alfozan was not authorized to enter the conference room where the device was found.
Details of the Investigation
Building footage reportedly showed Alfozan near the room on multiple occasions in the days before the device was discovered. Investigators believe he entered the room directly on October 5, the same day a bag belonging to Alfozan was found elsewhere in the building, containing his wallet, identification, and a second recording device similar to the one recovered from the conference room. The device found in the conference room was hidden inside toilet paper and had encrypted contents, according to the DOJ.
Digital Evidence and Company Response
Investigators also pointed to digital evidence, including a chatbot account associated with Alfozan’s spouse that shared multiple identifiers and attributes with Alfozan’s own chatbot account. The linked account was used to seek information about continuous audio recording and Wi-Fi connectivity, with prompts related to building, customizing, installing, and remote accessing a device.
OpenAI stated that, at this time, there are no indications that Alfozan accessed or exfiltrated sensitive information such as model weights, source code, or customer data. The company emphasized its commitment to protecting its technology, data, and people.
Alfozan’s Background and Affiliations
Alfozan, who was fired from OpenAI, also holds a role as a partner at Raed Ventures, a Riyadh-based venture capital firm focused on investments in the Middle East and North Africa. Raed Ventures did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Alfozan’s hiring was announced in February, with his prior experience listed at Meta, Microsoft, and SAP, and his education at MIT in computer science and engineering.
Broader Implications
The incident underscores the growing concerns around AI security and corporate espionage. AI giants continue to release powerful AI models while calling for industry regulation, with China’s involvement adding complexity to the issue. The case highlights the need for heightened security measures and vigilance in protecting sensitive information in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
