A former ICU nurse in Florida has been charged with three felonies after allegedly stealing fentanyl from a critically ill patient’s IV infusion. Leslie Ann Pope, 54, of Jupiter, was arrested by the Port St. Lucie Police Department on October 8 following allegations that she unlawfully removed the opioid from the patient’s IV while working at Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital.

Incident and Investigation

The incident allegedly occurred in June, when Pope was not assigned to the patient’s care. A family member claimed they witnessed Pope using a syringe to withdraw fluid from the fentanyl infusion and then placing the syringe in her pocket before leaving the room. The following evening, Pope allegedly returned to the patient’s room and attempted to manipulate the IV equipment, though investigators could not confirm that additional medication was removed during the second incident.

The case led to an extensive investigation involving witness interviews, hospital video footage, medical records, and coordination with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The investigation was detailed in a 15-page arrest affidavit. Cleveland Clinic confirmed that Pope no longer works for the hospital system and that leadership is cooperating with police on the case.

Charges and Medical Context

Pope has been charged with grand theft of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, and fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance. Fentanyl, a powerful opioid used to treat severe pain, is a controlled substance that requires strict handling and monitoring in medical settings.

Pope reportedly claimed an alarm required her to intervene with the patient’s IV, but the family member, who has medical experience, disputed those claims and alerted hospital workers. Police emphasized that they are not speculating on the motive behind the alleged theft, stating they do not have information on whether the substance was used personally or for other purposes.

Public Response and Hospital Statement

The hospital has not commented on the details of the case beyond confirming Pope’s employment status and collaboration with law enforcement. The incident has raised concerns about the security of controlled substances in medical facilities and the potential for insider theft. Law enforcement continues to investigate the case, with no further details disclosed at this time.
