Prostitution Surges in New York Amid Policy Shift
New York City faces rising prostitution activity as policies shift, with arrests dropping sharply in key areas.

New York City is witnessing a surge in prostitution activity as policies shift under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has embraced a softer stance on the issue. The city’s approach has led to a significant decline in prostitution-related arrests, particularly along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, where the sex trade is reportedly flourishing.
Arrests Drop, Trade Thrives
According to NYPD figures, prostitution-related arrests along Roosevelt Avenue have dropped by nearly 59%, with just 193 arrests recorded through September 13, compared to 468 during the same period last year. Local leaders and residents describe the area as a hotspot for the sex trade, with sex workers openly soliciting passersby. A 40-year-old Manhattan man, identified as John, told the New York Post that he regularly rides the subway to the area, known as the ‘Market of Sweethearts,’ due to its low prices and minimal police presence.
Policy Shifts and Enforcement
The decline in arrests follows a period of intense enforcement under former Mayor Eric Adams, which saw a 477.8% increase in prostitution-related arrests along the corridor. Operation Restore Roosevelt, launched in October 2024, contributed to 397 arrests by that point. However, the current administration under Mamdani has taken a different approach, aligning with former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s strategy of reducing arrests and offering social services to sex workers.
Controversy and Concerns
Former New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa warned before the election that Mamdani’s policies would likely worsen the crisis. Mamdani, who supported Cecilia’s Law, a bill to decriminalize consensual adult prostitution, has faced criticism from figures like former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who argued that de Blasio’s approach had eroded the city’s quality of life. Cuomo warned that not enforcing a law effectively repeals it, leading to increased criminal activity and endangering communities.
Advocates and Responses
Advocates for decriminalization argue that criminal penalties drive sex work into the shadows, reducing earnings and increasing vulnerability to exploitation. City Hall officials claim Mamdani is working with neighborhood groups to combine enforcement with support for victims. However, Mamdani’s office has not commented on the Daily Wire’s request for comment.
