San Antonio Protesters Demand ICE Leave After Shooting

San Antonio, Texas — A small group of protesters gathered at San Antonio City Hall to demand the departure of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a shooting incident involving a Venezuelan immigrant. The protest, organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), drew limited attention from passing tourists in the historic Alamo City on Friday.

The protest was called to support Wilber Rafael Garces-Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan man who the PSL alleges was shot by an ICE officer during a law enforcement operation on September 20. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Garces-Perez was in an illegal status after entering the U.S. during the Biden Border Crisis. The incident occurred near the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane in Austin, where Garces-Perez attempted to flee from an ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officer.

After receiving emergency medical treatment, Garces-Perez was placed in an ICE detention center in Pearsall, Texas. Protesters at the San Antonio City Hall rally carried signs demanding ICE leave the city and criticized recent plans for a large commercial warehouse retrofit by ICE. The project, awarded to GardaWorld Federal Services, involves a contract exceeding $17 million.

Some protesters, wearing Palestinian keffiyeh scarves, carried signs with messages like “Jail All Killer ICE Agents.” The PSL is also organizing a protest in Austin on Sunday, marking the one-week anniversary of the shooting. A spontaneous protest at the shooting site included activists painting threatening graffiti on overpass support pilings and making threats against President Donald Trump and ICE agents. Texas Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene and remained until the crowd dispersed.

The event highlights growing tensions over immigration enforcement and the role of ICE in local communities. As the debate continues, the protests reflect broader concerns about the impact of immigration policies on both individuals and public safety.
