Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered military commanders to conduct a one-day stand-down in October to ensure service members have the opportunity to vote during the upcoming election season. The directive, announced in a Friday social media post, aims to remove barriers for troops to participate in elections, emphasizing the importance of voting rights for all American citizens, including those serving abroad.
Stand-Down to Support Voting Access
In a memorandum shared on X, Hegseth outlined the “Military Voting Stand Down,” which will be implemented every even-numbered year in October. The initiative includes providing time for service members to complete Federal Post Card Applications (FPCA), a form used for voter registration and absentee ballot requests. Commanders are also required to allow troops to vote while on duty if they choose, ensuring flexibility for those who may be stationed or deployed during election periods.
The directive also encourages commanders to provide scheduling flexibility for service members to assist their families with voter registration and absentee ballot processes. This support is intended to help troops and their families navigate the electoral process, particularly in cases where family members may reside outside the United States.
Nonpartisan Approach to Voting Access
According to Hegseth, the initiative is strictly nonpartisan, aligning with the current administration’s “new and apolitical War Department.” He emphasized that the move does not involve influencing or advising service members on how or for whom to vote. “We’re not telling you who to vote for,” Hegseth stated. “But we will give you every opportunity to do so. It’s then up to you to exercise your right as an American to choose your elected leaders.”
The memo further clarified that no commander, Voting Assistance Officer (VAO), or leader at any level shall attempt to influence, direct, or advise a service member or their family on how or for whom to vote. This policy reinforces the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process while supporting the rights of military personnel and their families.
