Tampa rapper Darius Adams, 28, has asked a judge to sentence him to death after being convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Alana Sims, and killing her unborn child. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the defendant’s prior acquittal in a double murder case.

Conviction and Jury Recommendations

Adams was found guilty of first-degree murder in Sims’ death and for killing the unborn baby through injury to the mother. During the penalty phase, a jury recommended life without parole for Sims’ murder but voted 8-4 in favor of the death penalty for the unborn baby’s death.

Sims was discovered dead on January 30, 2023, in an unfinished section of the Easton Park subdivision in New Tampa. She was shot in the back of the head from approximately three feet away. Her 18-month-old son, Yazan, was unharmed and asleep in a car seat nearby. Sims was five months pregnant, planning to name her unborn child Leilani.

Background and Motivation

Prosecutors argued that Adams lured Sims to the secluded location under the pretense of a party celebrating his acquittal in a 2020 double murder case. Three days earlier, on January 27, a jury had acquitted him of two first-degree murder charges in the shooting deaths of Trevon Albury and Daniel Thompson at a Lutz recording studio. Adams had claimed self-defense for those killings.

Instead, Adams murdered Sims because he was not ready to be a father and wanted to continue a relationship with another woman. Text messages revealed his intent to end the relationship with Sims, stating, “Tomorrow this s— done” and that their future would not include Sims. It was later determined that Adams was not the biological father of the unborn child.

Request for Death Penalty

On October 12, Adams sent a letter to Tampa Circuit Judge Mark Wolfe ahead of a December 1 Spencer hearing. In the letter, he requested that the court sentence him to the jury’s recommended death penalty, waiving any further mitigation or arguments from his legal team.

Adams stated, “I don’t have an issue with the death penalty, and have asked my lawyers to respect my wishes when we go to court.” He emphasized that he had already discussed the consequences of waiving mitigation with his attorneys and wanted the court to follow the jury’s recommendation.

Adams’ request does not automatically impose a death sentence, as the final determination will still rest with the judge. Prosecutors have not publicly responded to the letter, leaving the outcome of the case uncertain.
