Two Lenoir County, North Carolina, deputies were shot during a response to a report of shots fired on Friday around 11:20 a.m., according to local news outlets. The incident occurred at a residence, where the suspected shooter opened fire on the deputies upon their arrival.
ABC 11 reported that the suspect wounded one deputy by shooting him in the stomach. Law enforcement returned fire, prompting the suspect to retreat into the home. News 12 noted that the suspect soon began shooting again, wounding a second deputy.
Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers confirmed that both deputies were transported to Greenville, where one is currently in surgery. Rogers stated that the deputies’ wounds were not believed to be life-threatening. However, no details about the suspect’s condition were released.
Rogers declined to comment on the suspect’s situation, stating, “We’re not going to comment on that. When you have a situation, you want to let family know and things like that.” Law enforcement eventually located the suspect in the bedroom of the home, but no further information about the suspect’s condition was provided.
The incident has raised questions about the safety of law enforcement during routine calls. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting and identify any potential threats to the community.
