The Thuringian state parliament is set to hold a public hearing on September 30 regarding a motion by the far-left Die Linke party to push for the formal prohibition of the AfD. The hearing, which will be streamed, has sparked a broader debate on how far a democratic state should go in removing a major opposition party from electoral competition.

Luna’s statements have placed the issue at the center of the dispute, emphasizing that criticism of a government does not equate to hostility toward the constitution. She argued that while a free state may take action against actual enemies, it cannot punish thoughts or opinions. Luna also pointed out that the available evidence does not provide a convincing case for banning the AfD as an entire party.
