A violent stabbing attack occurred at a Benedictine abbey in southern Poland, resulting in the death of a priest and injuries to four others. The incident, which took place on September 24, involved a 31-year-old Ukrainian man who allegedly entered the abbey during a mass and used a kitchen knife to attack worshippers.
Attack at Historic Monastery
The attack occurred at the Benedictine Sisters monastery in Jarosław, where the assailant targeted clergy and worshippers. According to local reports, the man used a knife he retrieved from a kitchen to stab one woman and four men, including a priest who was in a confessional. The priest later died in the hospital from his injuries, while another priest remains in critical condition.
Local authorities confirmed the arrest of the suspect, who is described as a slim, tall brunette with no shoes on his feet. He was taken to the hospital in a white T-shirt and blue denim Bermuda shorts, appearing calm and cooperative with police.
Unclear Motives and Ongoing Investigation
The motives behind the attack remain unclear. Police are still gathering details about the incident, which occurred before noon on the day of the attack. The suspect, a Ukrainian citizen, was detained by officers from Jarosław and is currently in custody.
Mayor Marcin Nazarewicz of Jarosław stated that the city had activated its crisis management system in response to the attack. The Podkarpackie Police force confirmed that the suspect was arrested and is being investigated for the stabbing spree.
All the injured individuals were transported to the hospital, with three men suffering serious injuries. Officers are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the full scope of the attack.
The incident has raised concerns about security in religious institutions and the challenges of managing refugee populations in Poland.
