Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has announced she is expecting her third child at the age of 52, sparking conversations about late motherhood in Hollywood and beyond. The news was shared on her Instagram account, where she posted a video of her family dancing with glow sticks, with a tiny baby shape outlined over her stomach.

Swank, who is married to entrepreneur Philip Schneider, will become a mother of five. The couple welcomed twins Aya and Ohm in April 2023, when she was 48. Swank has spoken openly about her decision to freeze her eggs at 37 and become pregnant with her twins at 47, emphasizing that it was not simply a matter of waiting.

Swank on the journey to motherhood

“I would have had kids earlier. I’m not saying I actively waited until 47,” Swank told Women’s Health last year. “But that was a magical time in my life, when it all culminated. It was the right time for a myriad of reasons.” She added that becoming a mother later in life made her more patient and allowed her to focus on her children after establishing her career.

“I’m much more patient. I’m much more understanding,” she said. “I’m much more, I think, interested in a different way than I would’ve been. I’m really interested in their brains. I’m fascinated about what makes them tick.”

Joining a growing trend

Swank is not alone in this trend. Other celebrities who have become mothers later in life include Janet Jackson, who welcomed her first child at 50, and Halle Berry, who had her second child at 47. Sports media personality Erin Andrews also welcomed her first child at 45.

The broader shift toward later motherhood extends beyond Hollywood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average age of first-time mothers in the United States rose to 27.5 in 2023.
