Former NFL punter Kasey Redfern has passed away at the age of 35, according to South Carolina officials. Jonathan Lawson, the chief investigator at the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, confirmed the death, though details remain undisclosed at this time.
Battle with Brain Tumor
A GoFundMe campaign set up in 2023 revealed that Redfern was diagnosed with a brain tumor, later identified as CNS lymphoma. His wife, Lauryl Redfern, shared on Facebook that her husband had transitioned to hospice care due to his deteriorating health.
“The love of my life” had been experiencing a significant decline in recent weeks, including falls, memory loss, and vomiting, which she attributed to cognitive decline caused by neurotoxicity from his treatments over the past 3.5 years,” Lauryl explained.
“His poor brain has had all it can take treatment-wise, so we want to make sure he can be as comfortable as possible,” she added. Lauryl expressed gratitude and peace, saying that if her husband makes it to Heaven, he would be “whole and in glory with our Savior.”
Football Career
Redfern joined the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars after graduating from Wofford College in 2014. Over the course of four seasons, he played for several teams, including the Chargers, Panthers, Browns, Lions, Cowboys, and Falcons. His career, though brief, was marked by his contributions on the field as a punter.
As the NFL continues to grapple with the long-term health effects of the sport, Redfern’s passing serves as a reminder of the risks athletes face beyond the field. His family’s public statement highlights the personal toll of such battles and the importance of compassionate care in the final stages of life.
