Rand Paul Considers 2028 Run, Calls for Free-Market GOP

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is once again considering a presidential run in 2028, tying his decision to the outcome of the November midterm elections. In an interview on Newsmax’s Finnerty, Paul admitted he has not yet made up his mind, stating he will wait for the midterm results before deciding whether to enter the race.

Paul, who previously ran for the Republican nomination in 2016 and withdrew after a fifth-place finish in Iowa, emphasized the need for a ‘free-market conservative’ within the GOP. He argued that the party currently lacks a candidate willing to challenge its populist economic direction.

Free-Market Vision for GOP

Paul described the current GOP as needing a candidate who believes in the importance of international trade, the dangers of debt, and the benefits of a limited government. He criticized the party’s populist economic approach as an ‘economic fallacy,’ suggesting that a robust debate is needed to steer the party back toward free-market principles.

‘Capitalism made America great,’ Paul stated, reinforcing his belief in the power of free markets. He also highlighted the importance of opposing government overreach in business, stating that the government should not own businesses or be involved in private industry.

Continuity in Message

Paul’s message remains consistent with his earlier statements. In March, he told CBS he was ’50-50′ on a 32028 run and would decide after the 2026 midterms. He then lamented that the party’s free-market, libertarian wing had been weakened, with him often being ‘the only one left for free trade’ in the Senate.

Six months later, his stance has not changed. Paul continues to advocate for policies that oppose tariffs, industrial policy, and government intervention in private industry, pushing for a primary fight over the direction of the Republican Party.
