Three migrants have died after a smuggling boat capsized off the coast of northern France, marking another tragic incident in the ongoing migrant crisis in the English Channel. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, with two adult women and a 10-year-old boy declared dead by a medical team on Monday morning.
Smuggling Boat Tragedy Near Calais
The boat, described as a ‘migrant taxi’ type used by smugglers, was reported to have capsized near the Blériot Plage beach, close to the port of Calais. The weather conditions were calm, with no indication of severe weather contributing to the accident. An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene, and an emergency medical team attempted to revive the three, but the child and two women were confirmed dead at the scene, according to the BBC.
Rescue Efforts and Migrant Numbers
Six rescue boats responded to the incident, and the remaining migrants aboard the boat were landed in Calais. Authorities believe 105 migrants were on board the rubber inflatable. The incident underscores the risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the English Channel, with smugglers using increasingly sophisticated methods to transport large groups.
Ongoing Migrant Crisis and Smuggling Trends
The European migrant crisis continues to be marked by the activities of criminal gangs exploiting weak border controls. The IOM reports that around 37,000 migrants have died trying to reach Europe since 2014, with at least 22 known deaths in the English Channel this year. The British government is currently paying France €750 million to control its borders, citing a 40% decrease in migrant arrivals to Britain as evidence of the policy’s success.
Smugglers’ Adaptation and Rising Risks
Despite government efforts, smuggling gangs are becoming more organized and effective, with larger boats carrying more migrants. The average number of men per boat has increased from a dozen to over 60, with some boats reaching record numbers. Last week, 781 migrants arrived by small boat, a record for the year, highlighting the persistent challenges in managing the migrant crisis.
