Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has stepped in to help President Donald Trump find a new press secretary, following the abrupt departure of Katie Zacharia, who served less than a week in the role. During a recent interview with Fox News, Leavitt emphasized the challenges of the position, stating, “White House press secretary is a tough job. I know that because I did it.”
Challenges of the Role
Leavitt acknowledged that the job requires significant preparation and that performance can only be fully assessed once someone is in the role. She said, “Many people say it’s one of the hardest jobs in politics. It takes a lot of preparation. Sometimes you don’t know how someone will perform until they go out there.”
Trump’s Search for a New Secretary
Leavitt confirmed that Trump is actively considering candidates for the role, which she described as “an amazing job” with “incredible opportunities.” She added, “I’ve offered my help to the president to help him select someone who can serve him and the country well.”
Qualities Trump Should Look For
When asked about the qualities Trump should seek in his next press secretary, Leavitt said she would keep her counsel private but assured that Trump understands the demands of the role. “Nobody understands the press better than Donald Trump,” she said. “He knows he needs someone who is tough, who is smart, who understands his policies, who is loyal, and who can go out there and put up a fight.”
Leavitt’s Future Plans
Leavitt, who returned to her home state of New Hampshire, was also asked about her political ambitions. She stated, “I’m all set. I don’t have any plans to run for office in the near future at all, or in the future at all. I’m home with my family and we’re really excited about that.”
Leavitt’s Political Career
Leavitt, the first Generation Z candidate to win a Republican primary, lost the general election to incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas in 2022. As the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history, she also became the first to give birth while serving in the role earlier this year. After returning from maternity leave, she announced her resignation, stating, “Right now, I’m really focused on being a wife and a mother to my two very young children. That’s why I made the decision to leave Washington.”
